Sam Shipley and Jeff Halmos have carved out an irreverent niche in the fashion world. Self-deprecating and charming and all those other adjectives that basically mean they make what they do look easy. Which it isn’t. This fall they’re expanding from apparel by launching S&H Publishing. Their first title, We’re an American ____ is based on the design couple’s road trip around the country. During the last part of summer, Jeff and Sam hit up thirteen Barney’s Co-op locations across the country, interacting with consumers with Mad lib questionnaires and snapping photos along the way. No word if the publishing wing of S&H plans to release any other titles. The book will be available exclusively at the Shipley & Halmos website and at Barney’s locations around the country.

It’s no surprise that Converse reached way back to the 1930s for inspiration for their fall Jack Purcell models. First off, it’s the shoe’s 75th Anniversary so who wouldn’t pay homage to a heritage going back that far. Also doesn’t hurt that heritage is cat nip for everyone right now. Heritage heritage heritage. For Converse, it definitely works. Using mostly earth tones and canvas (aside from a couple metallic versions), these Jack Purcell’s have a standard issue appeal to them.

The rest of the releases follow…

The Nothing Design Group is one of our favorite, quirky agencies with one of the best names. Right now their haptic penna has got our attention. The quill is actually a ballpoint pen that serves as a bookmark and impromptu notepad… which would mean you’d need two pens but let us not get too complicated. The nothing in Nothing Design refers not to output but to the ecologically friendly nature of their products… and our new favorite pen is no different.

We’re not normally rushing out to check out the latest film centered around ballet. No, Philistines we are not but it just doesn’t register on our normal radar. Robert Altman was a genius yes, but The Company didn’t find its way to the top of the queue. Exceptions are definitely going to be made with Darren Aronofsky’s Black Swan. The director of Requiem for a Dream and The Wrestler is a master of mood and his new project looks to be no exception. Plus, Mila Kunis and Natalie Portman hook up. Kaboom.

Switching up his tactics a bit, Banksy is moving into the video realm with these two releases from his Youtube channel. In the first one, a Glastonbury concert-goer offers Prince Charles a little weed, even throwing him a bag at one point. In the other, children enjoy an oblivious ride on a netted dolphin, with parents snapping away.

In less than three hours our lives as we know them are about to change here at the ANTENNA offices. OK, extreme maybe, but when lunch decisions hover over us like a dark & stormy cloud on a daily basis the endless daydream of EATALY finally becoming a reality at 4 pm today is an overdue light at the end of the dismal dirty deli tunnel. Just two blocks away, we have been taunted by the gigantuan imported food hall that is about to monopolize breakfast, lunch and dinner in the Flatiron. Truth be told we were angry at Eataly for a while. First, for it’s ridiculous name, then for it’s false promising opening dates (it was first set open in the spring). We dreamed of endless summer evening’s at La Birreria, the rooftop beer garden now slated to open in November. argh. (again, never not false promising), we dreamed of drowning ourselves in Lavazzo americano’s, imported cheese’s and cooking classes… but, you know what? Now, that the day has arrived I’m a little nervous to go, in fear that we might be let down by the 50,000 sq. ft. food mecca. But, hey, it’s just food, right? Right… -KV
