We have the pleasure of working right near the Flatiron building in NYC. There’s a nice middle park space that’s been occupied by flower bench installations, Top Chef tents, but today it was taken over by countless Starbucks cups and coffee. I asked a gentlemen with a brown Starbucks shirt standing behind a booth what the deal was and he said all I had to do was bring a cup of coffee from Starbucks and trade it in for one of their “A Green Project” tumblers. So that I did. I walked up to the Starbucks counter, bought a $1.50 pike roast, drank it, and made the trade. Someone might have mentioned something about getting ten cents off of your coffee when you bring that into a Starbucks from now on as well.

Just in case you can’t make it out, the tumbler reads this, “Thanks for taking the time to participate in this important (and fun) event. The tumbler you’re holding is our little way of saying thanks for your personal pledge. When just one person like you switches from paper cups to a reusable mug, it saves trees. When thousands make the switch, it saves forests. Which means every time you use your tumbler, you’ll know your small thoughtful act is contributing to the much bigger picture – a picture that has a lot of trees in it.”

The New York City Green Project is set for today and tomorrow, so stop by, get your own, and help the world a bit. -SK

Sometimes we’re artists here at Antenna. We considered illustrating “food on a stick” ourselves a couple issues back. Why would we get someone else to illustrate when we could have our very own Editor in Chief do it? When it came down to it, we had a million things going on, with the pressure and the time constraints, we decided to get someone else to do it. But, it was for the good of the magazine, she wanted to do her best work. Some of her work is illustrated below. (From Left to Right: Building and a street, Corn Dog, Tempura Chicken on a stick, a potential G-Shock Advertorial that didn’t make the mag. But you already knew what they were.)
Unlike us, you may not have a magazine to make, and unlike us, you may be a real artist. John Fluevog is holding a design contest for their next ad. The winner will have their ad featured in a number of publications and also win a $1000 gift card to John Fluevog. Enter here and if you need any inspiration, take a good look at the any of the images by our own EIC. Good luck! -SK

After a few days of rain, cold weather and inappropriate wind speeds, we think that Spring has finally sprung, but shifts in temperature are not the only thing to be expected (pda-phobes beware). Chances are your closet will be making a nice turnover as well. Especially with big moves being made by already loved companies such as Evisu and Common Projects. With a recent brand relaunch and an upcoming 20th anniversary, Evisu has collaborated with Common Projects. These Autumn Winter 2010 sneakers will be the first Common Projects under $200 and come in leather vulcanized low ($165) and hi tops ($185). They come in three color-ways with the Common Projectsʼ trademark foil heel stamp. The Evisu by Common Projects collaboration captures Scott Morrison’s influence over the rebranding of Evisu, made with their exacting standards for quality and clean, modern design. So make sure to leave room in your closet. They’ll be debuting in August at select premium retailers. -KV & SK

Well some of BFF’s avid supporters have put together something they call The 2010 Red Hook Criterium. It takes place on the 20th of this month and the entry fee is a mere 15 dollars. Their description of the event goes like this: “The 2010 Red Hook Criterium is an unsanctioned bicycle race through a desolate post-industrial area of Brooklyn. Track bikes are mandatory for the riders and the field consists of semi-professional ‘roadies’, bike messengers, and urban cyclists. The first person to cross the finish line at the completion of 20 laps will take home the famed cobblestone trophy.” Check the details here. Good luck! -SK

Hey all, I just wanted to take a moment out of my crazy day to introduce you to a rad brand from oversea’s – Serbia to be exact. Carrot Clothing was founded almost a decade ago by a young man named Aleksandar Gligoric who had a desire to speak out against the man, only citizens of other countries aren’t as fortunate as Americans when it comes to vocally expressing their opinions. Alex’s creations, which promoted anti-war sentiments on tee shirts, landed him behind bars as a political prisoner for six months. Luckily, he is a free man these days and has persisted in carrying out his beliefs. Check out their site to view current styles. If you like what you see, you should know that part of the profit from each sale goes to a charity of Alex’s choice, courageous & generous, two qualities I always applaud. Enjoy. -KG
